Traveling to San Sebastián is always a good idea, but... the Basque climate has its own unique character. Sun, rain, wind, cool weather in summer and mild winter: anything can happen in 24 hours .
That's why we've prepared this practical guide with everything you should pack for each season. So you can enjoy your trip without being caught off guard by the weather!
Spring (March – May): Layers, umbrellas, and a desire to explore
Spring in San Sebastián is green, vibrant... and a bit unpredictable. You can have sunshine at midday and rain in the afternoon.
What to bring:
- Lightweight waterproof jacket
- Comfortable shoes that can withstand some water
- T-shirts + thin sweater
- Sunglasses + folding umbrella
- Backpack for excursions
- Clothes for walking around the city or hiking in the mountains
Local tip: In April, don't get too confident. It can feel like summer... until the north wind blows.
Summer (June – August): beach yes, but with a jacket just in case
Although it's summer, the nights in San Sebastián can be cool, and the sea breeze reminds you that the Cantabrian Sea is nearby.
What to bring:
- Swimsuit and towel (beach mandatory!)
- Sandals and flip-flops
- Light clothing, but add: sweatshirt or jacket for the evenings
- Solar protection
- Cap or hat
- A windbreaker or raincoat in case of summer rain
Bonus: Summer rains here are brief but intense. Always carry an extra layer of clothing.
Autumn (September – November): Spectacular nature and changeable weather
Autumn in San Sebastián is beautiful and peaceful, but it also marks the return of cooler days and more frequent rain.
What to bring:
- Mid-season clothing (jeans, long-sleeved shirts)
- Moisture-resistant sneakers
- Waterproof jacket
- Layered clothing: T-shirt + sweatshirt + jacket
- Umbrella yes or yes
- Something more dressed up if you want to go out for pintxos
Extra: October is an incredible month for hiking in the mountains or visiting nearby towns with their autumnal landscapes.
Winter (December – February): cold, damp, but not extreme
It doesn't usually snow in San Sebastián, but the damp cold gets under your skin. The city retains its charm and is lively at Christmas and New Year's.
What to bring:
- Thick coat or down jacket
- Waterproof boots or footwear
- Scarf, hat, and gloves (yes, you're going to wear them!)
- Thermal clothing if you are sensitive to the cold
- Sturdy umbrella or hood
Winter plan: Pintxos route + red wine + warm walk along the bay = happiness.
Extra list: what you can't miss in your suitcase all year round
- Documentation and accommodation reservation
- Mobile charger + power bank
- Basic toiletry bag
- Comfortable clothes for walking
- Desire to eat pintxos
