Travelling to San Sebastian is always a good idea, but... The Basque climate has its own personality. Sun, rain, wind, cool in summer and mild days in winter: Everything can happen in 24 hours .
That's why we've prepared this practical guide with everything you should pack for each season of the year. So you can enjoy yourself without being surprised by the weather!
Spring (March – May): layers, umbrellas and a desire to explore
Spring in Donosti is green, alive... and a little unpredictable. You can have sunshine at noon and rain in the afternoon.
What to bring:
- Lightweight waterproof jacket
- Comfortable shoes that can withstand some water
- T-shirts + thin jersey
- Sunglasses + folding umbrella
- Backpack for excursions
- Clothes for walking around the city or hiking in the mountains
Local Tip: In April, don't be overconfident. It may seem like summer... until the north blows.
Summer (June – August): beach yes, but with a jacket just in case
Although it's summer, in San Sebastian the nights can cool down and the sea breeze reminds you that the Cantabrian Sea is nearby.
What to bring:
- Swimsuit and towel (beach required!)
- Sandals and flip-flops
- Light clothing, but add: sweatshirt or jacket for the evenings
- Sunscreen
- Cap or hat
- A windbreaker or raincoat in case it rains
Bonus: Summer rains here are brief, but intense. Always carry an extra layer on hand.
Autumn (September – November): spectacular nature and changeable weather
Autumn in San Sebastian is beautiful and quiet, but it also marks the return of cool days and more frequent rainfall.
What to bring:
- Half-season clothing (jeans, long-sleeved T-shirts)
- Moisture-resistant shoes
- Waterproof layer
- Layered clothing: t-shirt + sweatshirt + jacket
- Umbrellas yes or yes
- Something more dressed up if you want to go out for a pintxo dinner
Extra: October is an amazing month to walk in the mountains or visit nearby villages with autumn landscapes.
Winter (December – February): humid cold, but not extreme
It doesn't usually snow in San Sebastian, but the humid cold gets into the bones. The city maintains its charm and there is a lot of atmosphere at Christmas and New Year's.
What to bring:
- Thick or feathered coat
- Waterproof boots or footwear
- Scarf, hat and gloves (yes, you're going to wear them!)
- Thermal clothing if you are cold
- Sturdy umbrella or hood
Winter plan: Pintxos route + red wine + walk through the bay sheltered = happiness.
Extra list: what you can't miss in your suitcase all year round
- Documentation and booking of the accommodation
- Mobile phone charger + powerbank
- Basic toiletry bag
- Comfortable clothes for walking
- Desire to eat pintxos
